Orlando, FL — The Florida Chapter of the National Organization for Women (FL NOW) condemns President Donald Trump’s reckless and humiliating address to the United Nations General Assembly, calling it a dangerous display of authoritarianism, xenophobia, and disinformation that undermines global cooperation and threatens civil liberties at home.
“What we witnessed was not diplomacy—it was a tantrum,” said Julie Kent, President of FL NOW. “Trump used the world’s most respected diplomatic forum to insult allies, deny climate science, and threaten sovereign nations with militarized nationalism. It was an embarrassment to the United States and a warning to anyone who values democracy.”
Highlights of the UN Debacle
- Trump declared that nations are “going to hell” due to immigration policies.
- He called climate change “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world”.
- He mocked the United Nations itself, saying it offers only “empty words” and “strongly worded letters”.
- He claimed to have ended seven wars in seven months—a statement rated “mostly false” by fact-checkers.
- His speech was delivered in oversized, all-caps font, prompting speculation about his health and mental acuity.
Why It Matters
This speech wasn’t just a diplomatic failure—it was a symptom of a deeper crisis:
- Authoritarian escalation: Trump’s rhetoric mirrors his domestic threats to prosecute political opponents and deploy military force against civilians.
- Disinformation as policy: From Tylenol-autism claims to climate denial, Trump continues to weaponize falsehoods to justify regressive policies.
- Erosion of global trust: Allies were stunned into silence. The applause was minimal. The damage to U.S. credibility is profound.
FL NOW’s Response
Florida NOW calls on:
- Congressional leaders to investigate the administration’s use of disinformation and threats against international institutions.
- Media outlets to stop normalizing authoritarian behavior and hold power accountable.
- Coalition partners to mobilize against the erosion of democratic norms and global cooperation.
“This was not a strongman moment—it was a meltdown,” said Debbie Deland, VP of FL NOW. “We will not allow our country to be dragged into isolation, fear, and fascism. FL NOW stands with women, immigrants, disabled communities, and global allies who reject this vision and demand better. He is not at all a world leader. We are no longer leading on women’s right as a government, a component of our diplomacy.”
