Support Women, Privacy and the Florida Constitution

Abortion is up and down the ballot this year and that includes the Florida Supreme Court.  Anti-abortion hardliners have asked the Florida Supreme Court to change the meaning of “privacy” and say women have no right to an abortion.  These hardliners are confident they have the Florida Supreme Court on their side and want to come after who you can love next.  But you can change that with your vote.

Five justices are on the ballot.  Only Justice Labarga, should receive a “YES”vote.  The other 4 justices: Canady, Polston, Couriel, and Grosshans are all right wing extremists like Clarence Thomas and share an agenda to take away women’s rights.  These four should all be “NO” votes.  Justice Labarga affirmed the right to abortion in 2017 and has repeatedly disagreed with these four justices.

Voting NO and removing these 4 justices would send a strong, Kansas-Like message that Florida supports privacy rights, fair courts and Judges who follow the law.

NOW Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

NOW Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October’s Actions Will Highlight The Impact And Scope of Intimate Partner Violence—In All Its Forms

OTR Statement by Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — 35 years ago, October was designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) with the purpose of uplifting survivors, organizations, and communities who are working to combat ending violence against women. In the U.S., alone, nearly 24 people per minute are survivors of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner. Through the work done around domestic violence and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), we have learned of the many factors that influence the cycle of domestic violence for women, especially those in marginalized communities.

Misogyny, healthcare, and socio-economic status are some of the key factors that influence domestic violence. However, in recent studies, researchers have found cybersecurity, climate disasters, and differences in education status affect the likelihood of domestic violence and IPV in a household.

Ending domestic violence against women takes an intersectional approach because it is not caused by one single factor. This is why we take this opportunity during October’s monthlong observance of DVAM to raise awareness, sharpen the focus, and rededicate ourselves to the purpose of strengthening support for survivors and finally achieving an end to domestic violence, sexual assault and other forms of gender-based violence.

NOW supports legislation to make this practice illegal, allows victims to sue violators, enables courts to award punitive damages, and includes measures that keep perpetrators from repeating the offense.  Recent legislation like the FLASH Act, signed into law by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and a similar law passed in Virginia, drew inspiration from a survey conducted by Bumble, which found that nearly one out of every two women said they’d received an unsolicited nude in their lifetime.

We also recognize that under the leadership of the Biden Administration, the VAWA Reauthorization Act was finally signed into law, strengthening and expanding protections that have been long overdue.  But we also recognize how much more needs to be done.

Outside of enshrining laws that provide survivors with the ultimate protections, we must increase funding and institute community-based resources to support and implement the laws we put into place. We must work to close the systemic gaps that influence domestic violence and IVP.  Additionally, we will remain dedicated to our mission of changing society’s perspective on women and their bodily autonomy.

President Biden

NOW Supports President Biden’s Latest Guidelines On Reproductive Rights

Released on October 4, 2022

Washington D.C. – President Biden announced new guidelines on reproductive rights 100 days after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the second meeting of the Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access. The task force members comprised of top OB-GYNs shared powerful statements on how the current abortion bans prevent them from providing the best care to their patients, the negative impact felt in the medical community in the form of burnout, and the harmful toll that this has taken on the lives of the most vulnerable populations in our country.

As the Biden Administration continues to create space for pregnant people, healthcare providers, and communities affected by the lack of reproductive care, they are also working to institute a policy that moves our nation closer to codifying a national law that protects abortion. Their new actions from this most recent convening include allocating $6 million in grants from the Department of Health and Human Services to expand abortion services and sending guidance from the Department of Education to universities reminding them of their duties to protect their students.

There is no reason why our nation’s medical doctors must choose between practicing safe, crucial reproductive rights and practicing in a state that they call home. There is no reason why a woman should fear for her life in pursuit of reproductive healthcare. There is no reason why people should not have a say over the body they govern. NOW thanks the Biden Administration for their efforts in codifying human rights and pushing for a national law protecting all reproductive healthcare.
