FL NOW Condemns Murder of Minneapolis Man by Federal Agents and Calls for Transparency, Accountability, and Protection of Civil Rights

Orlando, FL — The Florida National Organization for Women (FL NOW) is expressing deep alarm and grief following the killing of 37‑year‑old ICU nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis on January 24. According to multiple news reports, Pretti — a U.S. citizen, lawful gun owner, and longtime Minneapolis resident — was fatally shot during a federal enforcement operation that has already drawn widespread public concern and justified criticism.

Why Decriminalizing Consensual Sex Work May Be the Evidence-Based Path Forward

The national NOW’s current stance reinforces a carceral approach to sex work that treats consensual adult sex work as inherently wrong, while hiding behind ‘safety’ language that functions as a moral judgment in disguise. Liberation requires trusting sex workers to define their own lives and safety. This includes respecting bodily autonomy, rejecting stigma, and violence against sex workers. In addition to refusing frameworks, often driven by white liberal women, that police and steal sex workers’ agency under the guise of protection.
