Mabel Norris Reese was a local Lake County/ Mount Dora journalist in the 1950’s who exposed the horrible behavior of the former Lake County Sheriff Willis McCall and associated deputies in the the cases of the Groveland Four and other Lake County citizens. This behavior included false charges, beatings, and the death of persons in Lake County primarily focused on the poor and persons of color.
Two books about this era and a perspective of the challenges faced by Mabel Norris Reese are ‘Devil in the Grove’ and ‘Under the Ruthless Sun’ written by Gilbert King. King received the Pulitzer Prize for ‘Devil in the Grove’.
