Message from acting Legislative Director Kat Duesterhaus:
Florida’s 60-Day Legislative Session has concluded for 2024, and we are proud to share that together we have achieved some remarkable victories! This year, we faced unprecedented challenges with the introduction of even more extreme anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ+ bills by Republican lawmakers then we have ever seen before. These bills aimed to erode trans rights, enforce harmful workplace policies, restrict access to abortion without exceptions for rape or incest, and even set the stage for fetal personhood.
Despite the uphill battle and strong support from Governor DeSantis and the Speaker of the Florida House for such extreme legislation, we stood firm in our commitment to fight for you. Through our collective efforts, we successfully halted 3 of our 5 top bills to oppose.
Furthermore, we are excited to share that we were instrumental in passing legislation that establishes requirements for the retention of rape kits for non-reporting victims. This crucial measure ensures that no more rape kits are discarded before survivors have the time they need to pursue justice.
Your dedication and support have been invaluable to our success. Whether through contacting lawmakers, attending committee hearings, or supporting our work through donations or membership, your contributions have made a difference.
Lets celebrate these achievements and use them as a catalyst to continue our fight for equality and justice. Thank you for being a vital part of this movement!
In solidarity,
Kat Duesterhaus,
