Florida NOW strongly supports the creation of a universal, single-payer health care system that guarantees comprehensive, affordable, and high-quality health care for all residents—regardless of gender, employment status, income, immigration status, or location.
Health care is a fundamental human right, not a privilege tied to a job or marital status. Women and gender-expansive people have long faced systemic barriers to accessing care, including reproductive health services, mental health support, and gender-affirming care. The current fragmented system disproportionately harms Black, Indigenous, people of color, disabled individuals, immigrants, and low-income communities.
Expanding Medicare to cover every resident is a crucial step toward dismantling these barriers, ensuring:
-
Equal access to preventive, emergency, reproductive, and chronic care without fear of cost or discrimination.
-
Coverage of essential services, including abortion, contraception, gender-affirming care, and comprehensive maternal health care.
-
A reduction in racial, economic, and geographic health disparities through equitable resource allocation.
-
The removal of profit motives from health care delivery, shifting focus to patient-centered care and community wellness.
