Florida NOW endorsed candidates, especially women of color, had a landslide victory in the primary this year. Support seven of our FL NOW endorsed candidates as they speak out on equality!!
Join us Wednesday, August 26th, 2020 at 10:30 am, Florida National Organization for Women in conjunction with Florida NOW endorsed candidates across the state will hold an online press conference and speak out to celebrate Women’s Equality Day and urge women, people oppressed and marginalized because of their gender, gender identity, and/or gender expression, and our allies to get celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the 19th Amendment this year by registering to vote by mail and voting for equality this November.
Although women achieved the right to vote in 1920, Women’s Equality Day wasn’t celebrated until 1971 after Congress passed a resolution to mark the occasion annually. In 2020, a 100 years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, women, gender non-conforming people, and non-binary people in the United States still do not have equal rights under the law and lag significantly behind in representation. In 2020, 127 women (26 in the Senate and 101 in the House of Representatives) hold seats in the US Congress. In 2020, women comprise only 23.7% of the 535 members of Congress and transgender, gender non-conforming or non-binary people have zero representation.
The Florida Legislature is also a bastion of male patriarchy and representation. In 2020, 48 of Florida’s 160 legislators are women and transgender, gender non-conforming or non-binary people have zero representation in the Florida Legislature.
Florida NOW is fighting to change that this year.
Join us online as Florida NOW endorsed candidates across the state speak out about equality and policy measures they are ready to fight for to end discrimination against women and other oppressed genders and increase women’s and oppressed gender representation in government. Women and people oppressed on the basis of gender and gender identity deserve equality and together we will continue to speak up and VOTE until equality is achieved.
